Meet Our Amazing Mentors!
Ever wanted to know what video game world our mentors want to live in? How about their favourite Pokemon? Find out all of this and more in this week's blog post!
Over the past year we’ve had some incredible mentors join us, and we thought it would be a great time to introduce you to some of them! Today we'll be introducing Tasha, Becky, KC, and Merlijn!

You're told you can only play one video game for the rest of your life, what game do you choose?
Tasha: Stardew Valley probs!
Becky: Probably Pokémon Emerald! There's so much to do - I'd probably try and hunt down shinies for all my favourites, and then use them to complete the Battle Frontier facilities!
KC: Probably Minecraft since there's so much versatility in gameplay and different minigames on servers
Merlijn: Terraria!!

Do you have any pets? If so, what are their names?
Tasha: One: tuxedo cat called Zuko (from Avatar, not Grease!)
Becky: Yes! I have a Giant African Land Snail named Humbug. And my family back home has a cat named Trixie - I miss her a lot since moving out, and I get my mum to send me photos of her every day!
KC: I don't personally, but my partner's dog is called Skittles. My family also has chickens, but they don't have names, they're just The Hens™ and we like them because they pay their rent... in eggs!
Merlijn: Dog, Martha, she is a princes and behaves like one too!

What's your favourite Pokemon?
Tasha: my boi CHARMANDER
Becky: My favourite since childhood is Flygon, however I'd say that shiny Ninetales and shiny Psyduck are my main favourites at the moment - I'm trying to get them both in Emerald!
KC: I have different favourites depending on my mood - at time of writing, I have a lot of love for the newest starters (Pombom, Browt and Gecqua) because their designs are awesome and SUPER CUTE! Big shout out to my level 100 Empoleon as well who got me through many a gym battle.
Merlijn: Mew!

What's your go-to ice cream flavour?
Tasha: probably vanilla tbh lol
Becky: Strawberry!
KC: Pistachio or Hazelnut
Merlijn: Vanilla! or chocolate, or cinnamon, just all ice cream!

What is your favourite game on The Code Zone?
Tasha: Recently discovered sword spinner through a kid using it for base code - would genuinely play that for hours!
Becky: Probably Phantom Foray! I love anything spooky
KC: Boulder Dash - it reminds me of the old school arcade version of Donkey Kong!
Merlijn: The Asteroid Field!

About The Code Zone
We run coding clubs for children aged 6 to 16. Live online clubs are open to children anywhere in the UK, and our in-person clubs run across Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. Over 1,000 children are enrolled.
A live club is one hour a week, in a group of no more than six, with the same DBS-checked, STEM-certified mentor.
Children build their own games rather than working through a set course, and levels move down as readily as up so the work always fits. More than a third of our members are autistic or have ADHD, based on what parents tell us when they join.
Most children start in Scratch or MakeCode and move to Python and TypeScript when they are ready. Mentors write a note on every child after every session, so we know when somebody is ready to move up or would rather stay put. Nothing is forced.
In 2025 we received the Autism Inclusion Award from the National Autistic Society, and in 2026 we were ranked second in the UK in Club Hub UK’s Top 100 Children’s Activity Providers, scored by five independent judges on safeguarding, inclusivity and community impact. Every mentor is DBS-checked and STEM-certified.

The blog is in two halves. Guides are the evergreen explainers written by the mentors who teach the clubs, covering the questions parents actually ask: what comes after Scratch, how to support a coding-mad child when you cannot code yourself, and what works for autistic and ADHD children.
Club news is the other half, and it is where posts like this one live: game jams, Minecraft builds and weekly roundups, written up by whoever ran the session. Neither is marketing. If you want to know what an hour actually looks like before you book anything, club news is the more honest read of the two.
