How to support a coding-mad child when you can't code

You don't need to learn to code to help your child. What they actually need from you has almost nothing to do with coding, and nobody tells non-technical parents this, so it's worth saying plainly.

Children don't give up on coding because it's too hard. They give up at a very specific moment: the first bug they can't fix on their own, with nobody around who can help. It usually arrives around week three. The code doesn't work, they don't know why, and the feeling isn't "this is a puzzle", it's "I'm not clever enough for this". That moment, not the difficulty of any language, is where most children's coding ends.

You can't fix their bug. But you can be the person who stops that moment from being the end, with four questions that work on almost any problem, in any language, with zero technical knowledge:

  • What did you expect to happen?
  • What happened instead?
  • What was the last thing that worked?
  • What's the smallest piece we could test on its own?

That's most of real debugging. Professional programmers ask themselves exactly the same questions. About half the time, your child will spot the problem while explaining it to you. Programmers call this "rubber duck debugging", because explaining a bug out loud to anyone, even a rubber duck, is often enough to solve it. You are a significant upgrade on the duck.

What else actually helps

  • Be curious rather than impressed. "Show me how it works" beats "that's amazing". Children can tell the difference, and explaining their project deepens their understanding.
  • Short and regular beats long and rare. Two 45-minute sessions a week, stopped while they still want more, work better than a whole exhausted Saturday.
  • Model being stuck. If you sit with them and learn a little Scratch yourself, they watch an adult be confused and work through it, which is the exact lesson they need.

When a mentor makes the difference

The four questions carry you a long way. But as projects grow, some problems need someone who can actually read the code. Children with big ambitions can stall for weeks on something a mentor untangles in minutes, and a good mentor teaches the why as they go.

That's what our clubs are: small groups, patient DBS-checked mentors, and children building their own games at their own pace, with someone on hand for exactly the moments this article is about.

There's one more thing that matters if you can't code, and it's the bit we're asked about most. You won't be in the session, so you can't tell how it went by looking. Every mentor writes a note on every child after every single session: what they built, whether they got stuck, whether they showed their game to the group.

Who wrote this

We run coding clubs for children aged 6 to 16, so the guides here are written by the mentors who teach them rather than by a marketing team. Live online clubs are open to children anywhere in the UK, and our in-person clubs run across Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk.

A live club is one hour a week, in a group of no more than six, with the same DBS-checked, STEM-certified mentor.

Children build their own games rather than working through a set course, starting in Scratch or MakeCode and moving to Python and TypeScript when they are ready. More than a third of our members are autistic or have ADHD, based on what parents tell us when they join.

Mentors write a note on every child after every session, which is how we know when somebody is ready to move up a level or would rather stay where they are. Levels move down as readily as up. Nothing is forced, and staying put is a perfectly good outcome.

In 2026 we were ranked second in the UK in Club Hub UK’s Top 100 Children’s Activity Providers, scored by five independent judges on safeguarding, inclusivity and community impact, and in 2025 we received the Autism Inclusion Award from the National Autistic Society. Over 1,000 children are enrolled.
