My son absolutely loves The Code Zone. He genuinely looks forward to his session every week and it’s been amazing watching his confidence and coding skills grow. The tutors are friendly, encouraging and make learning feel fun rather than like a lesson. As a parent, I love seeing him so excited about something that’s also teaching him such valuable skills for the future. He comes away proud of what he’s created and always wants to tell me about it. Really lovely club and definitely worth it — highly recommend!

My son attended Code Zone live lessons for several years. He is autistic, selective mute and struggled with school but wanted to learn game design so we signed him up. When he was struggling to attend school having the live lessons once a week gave us some much needed structure, but there was never any pressure to interact outside his comfort zone. His mentor was fantastic, absolutely understand George's needs and communicating via messages rather than expecting him to speak. There was a long period of time our son didn't speak to anyone outside our family except his mentor Nik, and that gave us hope. Although he now feels he has grown out of the clubs, it has given him a solid foundation in Python coding and helped him decide what elements of design he wants to pursue. Code Zone also has fantastic customer service, letting us know any time he missed a session and offering alternatives when necessary. Really thoughtful and proactive. Highly recommend!

The classes are well thought through and the instructors are great, they know how to talk to children and engage them. They actively check whether any of them needs any assistance and they are very quick to help them. My son has learnt a lot since he joined and he has had a lot of fun. The classes don't just teach coding, but also logic and problem solving, all while playing. Customer service also is exceptional.

My 8 year old son, Jacob, recently did a taster session with The Code Zone and he absolutely loved it. Jacob has ASD and loves to talk a lot when he's excited; his mentor, Meg, was incredibly patient and brilliant at keeping him engaged. I am really happy with The Code Zone and the classes that my son attends. One thing that really stands out for me is the patience that the teachers have with the young people, my son is autistic so I always worry that teachers won’t understand him, or become frustrated by his needs, so I feel really happy that he is so engaged and happy in the class. The teachers are really supportive and patient and this is the type of energy I want around my child when he is learning. After one week he is now setting him self up for class and I don’t see him until it’s over. I really value safe secure environments where children can be themselves without fear and judgement, and he is definitely happy at the Code Zone.

My daughter had the BEST time in game dev with Code Zone, she engaged so well from the start and was guided brilliantly throughout. The session was really interactive and she loved being able to hack the game “Penguin Paddle”changing the sprite, switching up the colours and even making it more challenging! She was completely absorbed and didn’t want it to end, which says it all really. A huge shoutout to Jaz, her mentor, who was amazing at answering questions, keeping everyone engaged and making sure each child understood what to do. Such a supportive and encouraging environment 🙌 Would absolutely recommend for kids interested in coding or just trying something new!

Our nearly 10yo AuDHD child has always enjoyed coding, computer games and tech, but since being Home Educated has missed out. Having found The Code Zone, and especially Lauren his mentor, he has been super happy to be back to coding and making games again. Lauren is very patient, and we have found that he spends more time on Scratch and coding then playing his VR now which is a bonus! Looking forward to seeing him flourish over time!

But he loves his Tuesday session with Luna! The code zone are absolutely brilliant with my autistic son. They are extremely supportive, informative and inclusive going out their way to make sure my son’s needs are understood and met. My son finds it hard to settle into group activities but he has had no problems with his coding sessions and gets very excited for them. The groups aren’t too big so each child gets the help and support they need and it is a low stress environment where each child can go at their own pace.

Starting from Scratch?

Absolutely no coding experience needed! Our mentors are experts at teaching complete beginners. We start with visual, drag-and-drop coding (Scratch) before gradually introducing text-based languages when you're ready.

How Mentor Support Works

Your dedicated STEM Certified mentor will support you via text and video messages. Ask questions, get feedback on your code, and receive guidance as you progress through your coding journey.

FAQ

What equipment will young people need?

A decent internet connection, a laptop/desktop computer and access to a browser like Chrome to use The Code Zone Online platform. We're currently working on better supporting mobile and tablet devices, so for now you need a device that has a screen width of 12.9" or larger.

My child is a coding whizz - will they get bored?

No, they won't get bored. We encourage more advanced coders to 'hack' our challenges. We want them to create something new that matters to them and stretches their creativity and coding abilities.

My child is new to coding can they still join in?

How do Academy members receive support?

Yes, our challenges are designed to be scalable for all skill levels and abilities. If your child is new to coding - they can complete our 'Skill of Scratch' mini-series course before tackling the main challenges. Each challenge starts with a video intro from a Zone Leader to set the scene, and challenge cards also give more support.

The Code Zone Online platform also has tutorials and mini-series guides and help blocks with tips to help users if they get stuck. And for Online + Community customers have live Zone Leader support on hand for a more personal tutorial style of session,Members of Game Dev Academy are assigned a mentor who will send regular video messages throughout the week explaining how to play the weekly game, providing explanations about how the code works, and showing off the cool games that members have been working on.

Members can ask questions through our chat box and their mentor will respond by sending messages, helpful images, and personalised video messages.
