What we are like to work for

Small, informal and unusually invested in getting the hour right. Mentors shape the content the children build rather than delivering someone else’s script, which is the part most people did not expect to enjoy as much as they do. Several of our leads started as club mentors.

We will arrange and pay for your enhanced DBS check and STEM certification. You will sit in on a session before you commit, so you can see what an hour actually involves rather than taking our word for it.

We're currently recruiting a customer success assistant to join the Customer Success and Onboarding team.

FAQ

Do I need to be a professional developer?

No. We look for people who are good with children first and confident with code second. Many of our mentors are students or career changers. You do need to be comfortable in Scratch and willing to learn Python and TypeScript with us.

Will I need a DBS check?

Yes. Every mentor holds an enhanced DBS check and is STEM-certified before running a session. We arrange and pay for both.

What are the hours like?

Live clubs run for an hour at a time, mostly after school and at weekends, and mentors keep the same group each week so children see a familiar face. We will talk about what fits around what you already do.

Do I need to live near a club?

Not for the online clubs, which run across the UK. Our in-person clubs are in Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk, so those roles are local.

What is the training like?

You will not be handed a script. Mentors are trained to adapt to how each child learns rather than expecting the child to adapt to the session, and more than a third of our members are autistic or have ADHD, so a good deal of that training is about how to make an hour work for them.

What is the interview like?

A conversation rather than a technical test, followed by sitting in on a session so you can see what the hour actually involves before you commit to it. We would rather you decided it was not for you at that point than three weeks in.

Is there room to grow?

Yes. Several of our leads started as club mentors. Mentors also shape the content the children build, which is the part most people did not expect to enjoy as much as they do.

What sort of person does well here?

Somebody who finds it interesting when a child does something unexpected with a brief. The useful part of mentoring is rarely showing a child the answer: it is asking the question that gets them to find it, then leaving them to it.
