Our Top Tips for Making Your Own Game!
Got a super cool game idea but not sure where to start? Never fear!
Our mentors have prepared their top tips when it comes to making your own game from the ground up, keep reading to find out more...
Many of our members come to our sessions with aspirations to make their own games, and we’re more than happy to help! We even run our own Game Jams to give our members a head start into being able to do just that.
However, we know how difficult it can be to get started with your own ideas, so join us as we talk about our top tips for making our own games!
Make notes about all the key features!
The first thing we recommend when you have the idea is to write down a few things somewhere: Firstly, the main idea you have (so you don’t forget when you look back in the future) and secondly, the main parts you will need to make, be it sprites, scripts for specific behaviours, or even things that you don’t yet know how to do. This gives a nice idea of what kind of work you need to do to make a cool functional game!
Ask your mentor!
So now you’ve written some things down and know what kind of game you’re making. If you’re already a member of our Game Dev Club or Academy, now is an excellent time to ask your mentor for help! They might know of a game with similar mechanics or code that you can look at to get some ideas, or be able to point you towards coding skills that will help you learn the things we need to make this game a reality!
Experiment and have fun!
The most important thing about making your own game and the best tip I can give you is have fun! Take time to experiment and tweak, and remember to ask questions to find where to learn things!
